With an altitude of 2708 meters Volcano Poás is surrounded by coffee plantations and the cloud forest. The main crater, with a diameter of one and a half kilometres is a quite unique view. This is one of the largest craters in the world and its blue lake makes this an unforgettable visit.
Those who´d like to know more about volcanism, have the opportunity to visit a small museum located at the entrance to the national park.

Only a few plants are able to survive the high levels of sulphur vapour and the rocky soil, for example the Gunnera, which is also called, because of its very large leaves the "umbrella of the poor". A small hiking tour through the forest of the fairies leads you to the Laguna Botos, a small picturesque lagoon located in a dormant volcanic crater.
